The largest cinema screens

Every “world’s biggest screen” list measures the fabric. That is the number cinemas publish, and it is not the number you watch. A screen only shows you the part the projector lights, and the two rankings are not the same list.

What the difference costs

2 rooms are in the top 12 by fabric and not by picture — Cinema Cineplex IMAX aux Galeries de la Capitale, Dongguan Wanda & IMAX. The screen is there; the projector never fills it.

Going the other way, Gujarat Science City, Shandong Science & Technology Museum show more picture than rooms with more screen, because they waste almost none of it.

A 1.43:1 room lights nearly all of its screen. A 1.90 room showing a 2.39 film leaves a third of it dark and the ranking does not notice. The worked example is two Glasgow cinemas eight miles apart where one has 40% more screen and shows an almost identical picture.
