is created equal
Some “IMAX” screens are ten storeys of 15/70mm film. Some are a multiplex screen with the logo on the door. We track the real specs — screen size, projection system, aspect ratio — across IMAX, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, ScreenX and every chain's in-house big screen, so you know exactly what you're buying before you pay the surcharge.
Screen dimensions come from a specialist industry listing, and 417records are matched to IMAX’s official theatre roster — a match, not a lab check, and a different test from the 214 IMAX rooms whose dimensions two independent sources agree on. The rest carry a projector recorded in 2021, and IMAX has converted a lot of screens to laser since — those scores show as provisional (~IQ) rather than pretending to a precision we don't have.

112 rooms worldwide can show 1.43:1 — everything else crops it to 1.90, which is roughly a quarter less picture.

Where is The Odyssey showing in 70mm?
41 cinemasran a 15/70mm print, confirmed against IMAX's own engagement list. The print puts up about a third more picture than the digital showing in the same room.

What is the biggest screen in the world?
Traumpalast Leonberg IMAX lights the largest picture we can measure — 792 m². Biggest screen and biggest picture are different questions, and often different rooms.

Is my local IMAX any good?
It depends on the projector and the shape of the screen, not the logo. In the UK the best-rated is Vue Manchester Printworks IMAX. Search for it by name and the page will tell you what is in the room, and what we could not confirm.

IMAX or Dolby Cinema?
Different products. IMAX sells you a taller frame; Dolby sells contrast and brightness inside a conventional one. We track 313 Dolby Cinema screens and rank them on the same scale, but only IMAX goes past 1.90.

Is my local IMAX a real IMAX?
Every one is licensed, so nobody is lying — but the badge covers rooms that differ enormously. Only 112 can show the full frame, and some are narrower than a good multiplex screen.

Why does one screen beat a bigger one?
Because the screen is not the picture. Two Glasgow cinemas eight miles apart put up almost identical pictures, even though one has 40% more screen — a third of it is never lit.
