United States

There are 753 premium screens in United States, across IMAX, Chain premium screen, Reading Cinemas TITAN LUXE and Emagine Super EMAX. The biggest picture is at Science Museum of Minnesota — 884 m² of lit screen, 20% more than the next room.

39 rooms can show the full 1.43:1 IMAX frame, which is the thing worth travelling for if a film was shot with IMAX cameras. The rest crop to 1.90. 25 of them ran 15/70mm prints of The Odyssey, which puts up about a third more picture than the digital showing in the same room.

Worth knowing before you book: Virginia Air and Space Science Center never lights 33% of its screen. The fabric is bigger than the picture, which is why the ranking here is by lit area rather than by the dimensions cinemas advertise.

12 of these are domes, scored on projected surface area — not a like-for-like comparison with a flat screen, and noted as such on the pages.

368 of 753 publish their dimensions; the rest are scored on an estimate and marked as such. 62 of 753 have a projector confirmed by two independent sources. 17 rooms are digital with the generation never established — we say so rather than guessing which laser it is.
